One is the son of Saul, King of Israel; the other, after being banished, has had to join the Philistine camp. David and Jonathas are friends, but fate has placed them on opposing sides, in the midst of the torments of a fatally fratricidal war... Based on the biblical legend, Marc-Antoine Charpentier unfolds the story of a life-and-death friendship, in which one will lose his life and the other his most cherished possession, in a masterpiece of French Baroque. in a masterpiece of the French Baroque.

Just as Didon and Aeneas was written for a girls' boarding school, David and Jonathas was created for a Jesuit college - and with an overtly didactic aim. Friendship, loyalty, betrayal, sacrifice... This is no longer a distant legend but the destiny of two young boys faced with irrevocable choices. For Sébastien Daucé, "this gives the work an adolescent point of view, resulting in a spontaneity, a strength and a form of intransigence that are unusual in the entire operatic repertoire".

Organist, harpsichordist and musical director of the ensemble Correspondances, the conductor has established himself as a major figure among the new generation of French Baroque specialists. With David and Jonathas, he invites us to rediscover the refinement and power of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's music, with one of the summits of his dramatic work. To bring this timeless story to life, director Jean Bellorini has opted for a poetic approach that underlines the sadly eternal nature of religious, political and ethnic conflicts that, sadly, continue to set the world ablaze.
